In Tainan, anchor plates still adorn the walls of old buildings to reinforce the joining of the beam and wall. The anchor plate, usually either S shaped (a symbol of good fortune) or ram’s horn shaped, is transformed into the mug handle, symbolizing the riddance of evil and the welcoming of fortune and luck. The mouth of the mug is trimmed with a band of color derived from the hues of the walls and the sky.
