The chrysanthemum is considered in the Chinese culture to be a flower with calm and collected qualities and also graceful like a noble gentelman. It also denotes extended peacefulness, and because the word chrysanthemum in Mandarin Chinese is a homophone for “auspiciousness”, it therefore also represents propitiousness and longevity. Sanyu’s depiction of chrysanthemums in a vase is distinctively charming and delightful, and because in Mandarin Chinese the term chrysanthemums in a vase echoes with the words for “times, situations” (時局shí “jú”) and “peace, security” (太平tài “píng”), these items inspired by the painting thereby also serve as symbols of peaceful times.
